간혹 '내가 머스크라면' 같은 생각을 할때가 있다. 그가 내가 공상한 것과 비슷한 사고를 하고 있다면. 왜 화성에 꽂힌 것이고, 틈만나면 다행성종족에 대해 말하고 있는 것일까.

내 결론은 그의 사업들과 비전들은 대략 하나의 프로젝트로 수렴된다는 것이다.

땅파는 회사는 3차원으로 이루어진 대도시에서 교통체계만 2차원인 부조리때문에 기획했다고 하지만, 지하 3차원 교통체계는 대륙과 해저 뿐 아니라 Mars 에서도 적용 가능하다.

마찬가지로 저궤도 통신위성을 이용한 통신망과 전기 자동차, 배터리 에너지 시스템도 Mars 의 인프라로 활용 가능하다. 그리고 마치 위챗처럼 결제를 포함한 만능 앱으로 탈바꿈할 X는 화성 신도시의 초기 결제 시스템 역할을 할 수 있다.

어떤 인물에 대해 언론과 미디어가 만들어낸 이미지와 실상은 꽤 다를 수 있다. 일례로 한국을 방문한 트럼프의 연설을 들었을 때, 비교적 쉬운 언어로 상식적인 메시지를 전달하는 모습에 놀란 적이 있다. 다만 한 인물의 캐릭터가 아니라 그의 지지자들과 현상이 만들어내는 문제는 별개이다.

일론 머스크의 정치 성향이나 또라이 기질에 대해서는 잘 모르겠다. 다만 대략 회사와 사원의 처우보다는 비전과 미래뽕을 앞세워 장사하고 뭔가 큰 그림이 있다는 느낌은 든다.

다만 동시에 이런 생각이 들고 점점 확신이 강해지고 있다.

그가 나와 비슷하게 생각한다면.

화성 신도시는 지구의 인구 분산을 위한 곳이 아닐 것이다. 이주하여 유전자를 남길 인구는 극소수일 것이다. 궁극적으로 인구가 증가하여 안정적인 환경을 이룰지라도 그건 후손들의 사정이다.

그러면 대체 Mars에 지을 신도시에는 무엇이 생길까. 살아있는 인간은 불필요하고 인간의 gene 과 meme 보관만 가능하면 된다. 다행성종족이라는 조건을 충족하기 위해서는.

그의 회사들이 교통 통신 에너지 인프라를 만들고, 도시를 유지보수할 노동자들은 기가팩토리(또는 다음 버전)가 만들 것이다. 이제 슬슬 궁금할 것이다. 그 도시에서는 누가 지적 활동을 하게 될까.

이미 인적 자원은 '사람+도구'의 집합체로 다시 봐야하는 시대가 되어 가고 있다. 즉 지식 노동자를 포도당을 필요로 하는 두뇌와 추론을 할 수 있는 반도체 및 앱과 로봇의 조합으로 정의한다면.

나라면, 내가 일론 머스크라면 화성에 유기물과 산소가 필요한 까다로운 포유류 동물들보다는 반도체와 기계를 더 많이 보내거나 그곳에서 만들게 할 것이다.
